Intransitive verb meaning to open on its own or to be in an open state. Does not take a direct object and focuses on the result or natural occurrence of opening. Contrasts with 開ける (akeru), which is transitive. Note: also read as ひらく for a different nuance.
In a sentence
風でドアが開いて、部屋の中が冷えてしまった。
kaze de doa ga hiraite, heya no naka ga hiete shimatta.
The door opened from the wind, and the room got cold.
